Mom in Viral MLB Clip: Don't Mock My Husband

A viral "mom of the year" story that millions thought they saw at a San Francisco Giants game wasn't the one actually playing out in the stands. In a Substack post cited by Today, a woman IDed only as Erika, who was shown on the broadcast juggling a baby and a stack of ballpark food while her husband, Ramses, ate beside her, says the clip spawned a false narrative of a checked-out dad and "single married mom" that quickly turned vicious—complete with strangers telling Ramses to kill himself.

Erika writes that she'd gone to use the restroom and insisted on keeping their baby, Anastasia, with her so she could also change her diaper. She decided to pick up some food for the family on the way back to the stands, and when she returned, she told Ramses to eat first, as he hadn't had a real meal that day and was grieving the recent death of a close friend. "The camera showed what I was carrying in my hands," Erika writes. "It couldn't show what he was carrying that night." She also notes that the clip didn't depict his repeated offers to help or to share his sandwich with her.

"He ate, as I had told him to," she writes. "Our marriage has room for either of us to need help. That evening, I chose to take care of him." She describes Ramses as an engaged partner who splits parenting duties and says the online pile-on turned a lighthearted TV bit by Giants announcers into "days of real pain" for their family. Her ask of viewers: Reconsider turning a few seconds of video into a verdict on someone else's marriage. "Thank you for dubbing me 'mom of the year,'" she writes. "Please believe me when I tell you I can only be so with the dad sitting next to me." More from her here.
