Australian police are putting fresh eyes on a 25-year-old outback killing in which the victim is yet to be found. Northern Territory officers have released a cache of investigation photos linked to the 2001 murder of British backpacker Peter Falconio, hoping the images might shake loose new information, reports the BBC. Falconio, 28, was shot on a remote highway near Barrow Creek while traveling with his girlfriend, Joanne Lees, who escaped after being bound with cable ties. Bradley Murdoch was convicted of murder and attempted kidnapping in 2005 before dying in prison last year without revealing where Falconio's body was concealed.
Among the newly-public images: a full-length shot of Murdoch staring into the camera, photos of Lees and her injuries in the hours after the attack, and pictures of the couple's orange Volkswagen Kombi and a dark red stain at the crime scene, per the Guardian. NT Police Commissioner Martin Dole says Falconio's family has "now gone such a long time without the answers they deserve," and hopes the new images and Tuesday's 25-year anniversary of the murder will bring about new leads. "While a murderer has been held accountable for his crimes, this investigation can never be considered closed until Peter's remains are found," he says. There have been six previous searches, per ABC Australia, which cites an expert as saying the chances of finding Falconio now are slim. A reward of up to $350,000 remains on offer.
