A father in Colombia says his son did everything by the book in the US—only to be killed on his own block by a federal agent. Omar Duran told Noticias Caracol that 25-year-old Joan Sebastian Guerrero, a food delivery driver and night cleaner living in Biddeford, Maine, was in the country legally, with a valid work permit, and supporting his wife and 3-year-old daughter. "My son is a wonderful son—I don't know why they did that to him," he said, per the New York Times. Neighbors described the family as friendly and soft-spoken; DoorDash confirmed Guerrero worked for the company but said he wasn't on a delivery at the time of the incident. Colombia's president calls it an "assassination ... at the hands of the US government," per the Guardian.

The Department of Homeland Security says ICE officers had been watching the last known address of a person with a deportation order and describes Guerrero as an "illegal alien" who tried to flee a vehicle stop. Sen. Angus King's office says Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin told him agents had been looking for someone else. The shooting has triggered protests, a $300,000 fundraiser for Guerrero's family, and a bipartisan demand from Maine's congressional delegation for a swift, independent inquiry. Guerrero's killing—the 11th by federal immigration agents during President Trump's second term—follows another fatal ICE shooting in Houston, reportedly involving a person who was not the agency's intended target; ICE has since been ordered to halt most traffic stops.
