Remains of Lost 'Legendary Wilderness Figure' Are Found

A 14-year mystery in the Grand Canyon has narrowed, but not fully closed. Authorities have confirmed that human remains found on the Hualapai Indian Reservation in December 2025 belong to Oregon hiker Bill Ott, who vanished during a solo trek in April 2012. Ott, then 65, was no novice, Outside reports, but "a legendary wilderness figure." Ott, a former ranger at Utah's Dinosaur National Monument and Colorado River rafting guide, in 1981 walked the length of the Grand Canyon's north side over 78 days, reports the Arizona Daily Sun. He returned annually to explore, run the river, and document ancient rock art.

He disappeared while searching for prehistoric rock panels near Mohawk Canyon. A massive search in 2012 came up empty; his remains were eventually discovered by members of the Hualapai Tribe near a trail at the base of a 15-foot cliff, with a small daypack containing his wallet, cash, camera, and GPS. His main backpack hasn't been found, and officials have not determined a cause of death. The Daily Sun notes it's been speculated that Ott could have experienced a medical emergency or injury, or that he ran out of water in what was a dry year. Outside reports search parties at one point came within 300 feet of Ott's remains.
