Cori Bush Fails to Reclaim Her Seat

Cori Bush's bid to reclaim her Missouri House seat has fallen short, Politico reports. Rep. Wesley Bell, who ousted Bush in 2024, defeated her in Tuesday's Democratic primary rematch for Missouri's 1st District, a race dominated by disputes over Israel policy. Bell, a former county prosecutor, benefited from more than $2 million in support from the American Israel Public Affairs Committee.

His victory marks another setback for the progressive wing of the party and a win for Democratic leadership: House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and the Congressional Black Caucus PAC backed Bell. While in office, Bush was a member of the progressive group of House members called "the squad," the AP reports. She was one of the first members of Congress to call Israel's war in Gaza a genocide, Politico reports. In the heavily Democratic St. Louis-area district, Bell is widely expected to win the general election in November.

"It's a snag for Democratic progressives who have otherwise seen a slew of primary wins campaigning on ending military aid for Israel, and who have sought to make support from AIPAC into political poison," writes Emilio Perez Ibarguen at Politico.
