2 Students Dead After Rare School Shooting in Philippines

A classroom in the southern Philippines became the scene of a deadly livestreamed shooting on Tuesday, authorities say. Police report that a ninth-grade student at a school affiliated with Ateneo de Zamboanga University entered with a pistol and a rifle and opened fire on classmates, killing a boy in the tenth grade and wounding two others, then died by suicide on an upper floor, reports Reuters.

Zamboanga's mayor said the attacker broadcast the assault via a body camera; Reuters verified video showing the shooter, IDed by the AP as Mohammad Mael Jalani, moving between classrooms and firing. Officials say both guns were legally owned by the student's father, a customs officer who has been removed from his post, and who may face administrative charges for not properly keeping his firearms safety secured.

CNN notes that school shootings in the Philippines are rare. President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. ordered an investigation and called for stronger school-safety measures, per the Guardian. "We grieve with the families and the entire [school] community over a tragedy that should never have happened," Marcos said. The incident follows another fatal campus shooting in June in Tacloban City.
