Tropical Storm Warning Issued for Texas, Louisiana Coasts

Rain could soon be coming down hard along parts of the Texas and Louisiana coasts. A tropical depression in the Gulf of Mexico prompted a tropical storm warning Monday for shoreline stretching from Port Bolivar, Texas, to the Vermilion/Cameron Parish line in Louisiana, CBS News. If it continues to organize, the system will be named Tropical Storm Edouard, the Atlantic hurricane season's fifth so far. The system is expected to become a tropical storm by tonight, the National Hurricane Center said in a Monday afternoon update.

Forecasters say the storm's center could reach the Gulf Coast by Tuesday. The National Hurricane Center expects 3 to 6 inches of rain across coastal and east-central Texas, with the greater Houston area seeing up to 5 inches and some spots seeing up to 9 inches, the AP reports. Southwestern Louisiana could see 2 to 3 inches. Officials warn of flash flooding in low-lying and urban areas and storm surge of up to 3 feet.
