A shooting at a high school in the southern Philippines on Friday left two 14-year-old students and the teenage gunman dead and wounded at least 10 people, local government and police officials said. The shooting at Banga National High School in the South Cotabato town of Banga "remains under investigation," the Philippine National Police said in a statement. South Cotabato Governor Reynaldo Tamayo said the two students killed were a boy and a girl, both 14, the AP reports. Banga mayor Albert Palencia told the BBC that the 16-year-old shooter is among the dead and four of the injured are in critical condition.
Tamayo said the gunman's best friend told officials that the teenager was a member of a "true crime community." Authorities were investigating the account and whether it had any connection to the shooting, he said. "The suspect supposedly sat beside his friends and told them to go home 'because after lunch, I will be executing my plan.' His friends laughed because the shooter was a known joker," Palencia told Reuters. "After lunch, he started shooting students. He hit 10 students before killing himself."
- This is the country's third school shooting in recent months. In June, two boys, ages 14 and 15, killed three classmates at a high school in Tacloban in the eastern Philippines and were arrested. Last month, a ninth-grader in the southern Philippines livestreamed the killing of a classmate before taking his own life.
