A hacking crew that the FBI has publicly warned about now says it has turned its sights on the bureau itself. The agency has confirmed that it is probing "unauthorized activity" involving FBIjobs.gov, its online jobs portal, after the group ShinyHunters claimed online it grabbed "very sensitive" data on "almost ALL" FBI agents and job applicants, Politico reports. 404 Media reports that the hackers shared a sample affecting 5,000 alleged agents, including home addresses, phone numbers, and details on spouses—information security experts say could be valuable to foreign intelligence services, criminal gangs, or anyone seeking to intimidate agents.

Sources briefed on the probe told Politico the claims appear credible and described the incident as a serious counterintelligence failure. "It's really bad," one of the sources said. Investigators are examining whether ShinyHunters exploited Oracle PeopleSoft, a popular human-resources platform the group has targeted before, possibly through an unpatched or previously unknown software flaw. The FBI jobs site remained offline Wednesday with a "system unavailable" notice.

ShinyHunters said the breach was payback for an FBI bulletin about the group issued after a cyberattack disrupted thousands of schools in May. The bulletin accused the group of sextortion, saying it "may falsely claim to have sensitive or compromising information, including embarrassing photographs or videos of victims, which frequently do not exist." ShinyHunters said it was "offended" by the FBI bulletin and gave the agency a week to correct or remove it, the AP reports.
