A prominent Pittsburgh pediatric critical-care doctor was fatally stabbed in bed early Thursday in what police describe as a brutal home attack that also left his wife wounded. Authorities say 46-year-old Dr. Idris Evans, medical director of the Pediatric Critical Care Transport Team at UPMC Children's Hospital, and his wife were asleep in their Edgewood Borough home when a man armed with a kitchen knife set upon them shortly after midnight, per CBS News. Evans' wife told police the attacker, clad only in underwear and rambling about "being God," was addressed by her husband as "Elijah," suggesting the two men may have known each other.

"The wife is also unclear if the actor identified himself by name, so we're still investigating that," said Victor Joseph, Allegheny County's assistant police superintendent, per NBC News. She remains hospitalized in critical condition. Evans' wife had yelled for the couple's two children, ages 8 and 12, to flee the home during the attack; they were reported to be uninjured. "It was a very violent scene," Joseph said, describing broken furniture and mirrors, per CBS. Police say the couple had tried to fight back against their attacker.

Police later arrested 32-year-old Elijah Hemingway, who was found injured behind a nearby house by a K9 unit, per ABC News. He faces charges including criminal homicide, aggravated assault, burglary, and trespassing. Hemingway told police that Evans had invited him to the home and let him in, then attacked him with a knife, per NBC. Authorities, however, believe Hemingway entered the residence through an open window, per CBS, which notes a motive is still unclear. "Dr. Evans was a dedicated caregiver and valued member of our hospital and university communities," a UPMC spokesperson said in a statement.
