Larry David caused a ruckus last year with a satirical essay headlined "My Dinner With Adolf" that went after President Trump and Bill Maher. His latest picks a fight with the other end of the political spectrum: the Democratic Socialists of America. In his essay at Air Mail, David writes that he joined the DSA after the group accepted a dozen "modest proposals" of his. His parody of the group's actual manifesto has some doozies:
- "In an effort to make amends for centuries of slavery, reparations will be instituted, along with a lottery system in which white people will be selected to serve as slaves to Black families for one year. Lashings are encouraged for excessive whining, and government-issued whips will be distributed at no cost."
He says Israelis will now call themselves the "Bagel People" instead of the "Chosen People" and will turn over all their land to Palestinians and relocate to Pitcairn Island. "In our Socialist America," writes David, "everyone will be so fulfilled spiritually and financially that the police department will be dramatically reduced to where an officer's only job will be to adjudicate domestic disputes" at farmers markets. The New York Times notes that the DSA has declined to comment, but it rounds up critical online reaction (and interviews the commenters) labeling the 79-year-old David as unfunny, out of touch, and even racist. In defense, one supportive blogger writes: "I am not sure what brought on this 'coming out' by Larry; perhaps it was seeing his good friend Jerry Seinfeld repeatedly attacked by the Free Palestine zombies."
