The man who ended the Silver Rail Elementary shooting says he can't stop replaying the day he pulled the trigger. In his first in-depth interview, with Oregon Public Broadcasting, 36-year-old Bend, Oregon, carpenter and father of two Kaylub Giamanco describes the chain of small choices—a skipped packed lunch, an errand he didn't run, a handgun left in his truck—that put him on a street outside his daughters' school just as a 16-year-old with a shotgun approached. Giamanco says he followed the teen inside by crawling through a blown-out window, then fatally shot him in a special education classroom after the attacker had already killed three students and a teacher and wounded two others.

"I called my wife to tell her that I'm not coming home for tacos," Giamanco said of his interrupted lunch plans. Police and President Trump have hailed him as a hero; Giamanco, however, says he lies awake hearing screams and thinking of the families. "I want to apologize for not saving their babies," he now says. "The gratitude for saving people's children is awesome, but there were ones that I didn't save." He also comments on the teen gunman he killed. "Sometimes there's a child out there that didn't have the love that they deserved," he notes. "But I do want to believe that if he had more love in his life and better parenting, that this could have been prevented." The Central Oregon Daily News reports that a GoFundMe has been set up for Giamanco and his family. More of his interview here.
