Four people, three of them children, were killed Thursday in a shooting at an elementary school in Bend, Oregon. At least two people were hospitalized; their conditions were not released, the AP reports. "This is the kind of thing we never want to see happen in Bend," police spokesperson Sheila Miller said in a briefing as her voice broke, per the New York Times. "It's devastating." The attacker, who was said to be a 16-year-old boy, was killed, authorities said, but they added that they don't know if that shooting was by an officer, a bystander, or was self-inflicted. "We're in the process at this time of evacuating, going room by room, and evacuating each of the people who are in that school," Miller had said late Thursday afternoon, per NBC News.
Authorities received a call about a shot fired into a car outside Silver Rail Elementary at 12:59pm and arrived within minutes. More 911 calls came from inside the school, Miller said. The suspect was shot inside the building just after officers arrived. FBI agents have arrived to investigate. The school in Bend, which is more than 100 miles southeast of Portland, had 459 enrolled students last year, according to the Oregon Department of Education. The school serves students in kindergarten through fifth grade. Officials cautioned that the death toll could change.
