The "banana hero" of Central Florida has been unmasked. WFTV reports that Stephanie Oropeza was driving home from a Halloween party around 4am on Saturday when she saw an SUV leave the road and slam into the patio of Moderne, a bar in the heart of Orlando. Still in her banana costume, the nursing student pulled over, called for help, and checked on the driver. "It was just instinct," she said. The SUV plowed through planters, railings, tables, and about 20 chairs, but the bar was closed and no one was outside.
Security video of the costumed Good Samaritan went online as staff tried to find and thank her. Moderne's employees now want to buy Oropeza dinner; she calls what she did "the bare minimum" of being a decent person. "My fiance was like, 'You should have taken off the suit,' and I was like, that wasn't the first thing to come to mind" at the scene of the accident, Oropeza tells Inside Edition, which reports there was $50,000 in damage from the crash. The costumed helper also tells ClickOrlando.com that she has a nickname she prefers over "banana hero": "banana bandit."
