A new elementary school rising in Aubrey, Texas, won't carry a founding father or donor's name—it'll bear that of a retired custodian. The Aubrey Independent School District board has voted to name its fifth elementary campus Marilyn Hampton Elementary School, honoring the 76-year-old who spent 39 years cleaning classrooms, mentoring students, buying supplies for kids in need, and working football gates before retiring in 2022, WFAA reports.
Hampton, who now cares for infants at the district's Early Bird Learning Center, learned of the decision during a board meeting, when she was asked to roll out a "red carpet" that turned out to display the school's new name and was brought to tears. Long convinced she'd "failed" by not attending college, Hampton says the recognition has changed that: "Whoever thought a janitor would have a school named after them?" The school, currently being built, is expected to open next August, per WKRC.
