He Firebombed an Ice Cream Shop, Twice

A Minneapolis-area man has been found guilty of attacking an ice cream shop with firebombs twice in less than 24 hours. A federal jury convicted 32-year-old Firomsa Ahmed Umar of arson and attempted arson for the dual attacks on Fletcher's Ice Cream and Cafe in northeast Minneapolis, reports the Star Tribune. Prosecutors say Umar threw a Molotov cocktail at the shop on Oct. 19, which broke a window and started a small fire, per Minnesota Public Radio. He threw another the following afternoon, which didn't ignite.

Umar is being held in federal custody while he awaits sentencing, and the jury delivered more bad news for him on that front. Jurors separately decided that Umar chose the shop as a target because of "gender identity or sexual orientation," which makes him eligible for a longer sentence. The shop bills itself as a safe space for the LGBTQ community, and the owner suspects its Pride flag led to the attacks, per CBS News.
