Josh Mauro, a defensive end who spent most of his NFL career with the Arizona Cardinals, has died at age 35, his family and former teams confirmed this week. Mauro's father, Greg Mauro, announced in a Facebook post that his son died April 23, writing that the family is grieving but believes Mauro is now "healed and made new" and "living in the presence of the Lord." No cause of death has been made public. Outlets described the death as sudden.
Mauro entered "an athletic family" when he was born to American parents in the UK, where his father was working at the time, the Guardian reports. An undrafted free agent who entered the NFL in 2014, Mauro first signed with the Cardinals and played there until 2018. He went on to stints with the New York Giants, Oakland Raiders, and Jacksonville Jaguars, then returned to Arizona for his final NFL season in 2021, per NBC News. Over 80 career games, including 40 starts, he recorded five sacks and two forced fumbles.
The Cardinals said they were "heartbroken" to learn of his death and offered their "deepest condolences to everyone grieving this loss." The Raiders also issued a statement of sympathy, and Stanford University, where Mauro played college football and earned All-Pac-12 honorable mention in 2013, called him a key contributor to four bowl teams and two Rose Bowl appearances, adding that its thoughts are with his family and loved ones.
