An Incredible Streak Is Over at US Open

Something happened at the US Open on Sunday night that hadn't happened in two decades: Novak Djokovic lost in the first round. And it wasn't pretty. The 39-year-old, chasing a record-breaking 25th major, fell in five sets to Argentina's Mariano Navone, ranked 49th in the world, reports the BBC. The loss snapped an incredible streak of 77 consecutive first-round victories, notes the Athletic.

Djokovic vomited courtside during the match, repeatedly doubled over, and twice appeared in tears as his body, by his own account, collapsed in the humid conditions. "I don't want to take too much out of Mariano's win," he said afterward. "He's a nice guy and a fighter—but I didn't enjoy myself." The Serbian great said he's been struggling '"pretty much every match this year" with an unspecified "serious" health issue, raising the question of whether retirement is imminent. But in a documentary released earlier this month, Djokovic said he wasn't even considering it yet.
