Dua Lipa is taking Samsung to court, reports NBC News, accusing the electronics giant of cashing in on her image in an effort to move TVs. In a lawsuit filed Friday in federal court in California, the British singer says Samsung used a copyrighted photo of her, titled "Dua Lipa—Backstage at Austin City Limits, 2024," on its television packaging without her permission and is seeking "no less than $15 million" in damages. She's also looking for a slice of the profits associated with the sales of the TVs, notes People. The filing alleges the unauthorized use has weakened her brand and misled customers into believing she backs the product.
Her team argues the photo's placement on the front of TV boxes amounted to a fake endorsement, pointing to social media posts from fans saying things like they'd buy the set "just because Dua is on it." The suit claims copyright and trademark infringement, plus a violation of her publicity rights, and says Lipa issued Samsung "repeated demands" to stop using the image after learning of it in June 2024, but the company's response was "dismissive and callous," per Pitchfork. "Samsung's arrogance in refusing to stop its infringement confirms its conscious disregard of Ms. Lipa's intellectual property and personal identity rights," per the suit. A Samsung spokesperson declined to comment on the pending litigation; Lipa's lawyers have not publicly commented.
