Jose Alvarado's hustle turned into an unexpected body check on a very prominent courtside fan on Tuesday night. The Knicks guard dove into the first row at Madison Square Garden while chasing a loose ball in the fourth quarter of Game 3 of the NBA Finals and crashed straight into former New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg, reports the New York Post. The 84-year-old appeared briefly rattled but seemed fine. Alvarado quickly wrapped an arm around him, patted his chest, and appeared to check that he was OK.
"You never know who you'll run into at a Knick game!" one of the game announcers joked, per Us Weekly. The collision came during the Knicks' first home NBA Finals game since 1999, a star-heavy night that drew celebrities like Larry David and Ben Stiller, President Trump, and current NYC officials, including Mayor Zohran Mamdani. Bloomberg, who led the city from 2002 to 2013, stayed in his seat after the spill. The Knicks, chasing their first title since 1973, dropped the game to the San Antonio Spurs, 115-111. The playoff series now stands at 2-1, in favor of the Knicks.
