Mitch McConnell Hospitalized

Sen. Mitch McConnell is back in the hospital, but his office isn't saying why, Politico reports. A brief Sunday statement from spokesperson David Popp said only that the 84-year-old Kentucky Republican "was admitted to the hospital this morning" and is "receiving excellent care," with no details about his condition or how long he might remain.

McConnell, a polio survivor, spent eight days in the hospital in February with what aides then called "flu-like symptoms" and has faced mounting health scrutiny after freezing twice during 2023 press gaggles and suffering several falls. After one of those falls in 2023, he was absent from the Senate for almost six weeks, the Washington Post reports. He led Senate Republicans from 2007 until last year and has said he will not run for reelection, ending a long tenure as one of the party's most influential figures. His current term ends in January, the AP reports.
