A new SoFi Stadium security guard never made it home from his World Cup shift; his family is now hoping his death will help others live. Authorities say 22-year-old Aaron Avery was walking home from the June 15 Iran-New Zealand match in South Los Angeles when a white Tesla struck him near Van Ness Avenue and 104th Street, per KTLA. Relatives say his body was dragged about half a block and he was declared brain-dead the next day. The driver was arrested on suspicion of DUI, according to the family.
Avery's family chose to donate his heart, lungs, liver, and kidneys through organ procurement group One Legacy, which says Black patients (Avery was Black) are disproportionately represented on the transplant waitlist. Those organs may save up to eight lives, offering a silver lining to what the family describes as a nightmare. They say it was only Avery's second day on the job and he'd nearly reached a curb when he was struck by a driver who claimed not to have seen him, per KTLA and the New York Post. A GoFundMe page has raised $10,000 to cover medical and funeral costs as the investigation continues.
