US warplanes struck Iranian military sites Friday, one day after a commercial ship came under fire while leaving the Strait of Hormuz. Central Command said the strikes targeted Iranian missile and drone storage facilities and coastal radar sites, framing the attack as a firm reply to what it called Iran's "unwarranted aggression." The attacked vessel reported no injuries and continued on its route. President Trump had earlier in the day accused Tehran of breaching a newly signed ceasefire memorandum. The AP calls the clash the biggest threat yet to the agreement.

A senior US defense official said Friday's strikes are intended to be a response to the attack on the ship and do not indicate a resumption of major combat, per the New York Times. An American official told the AP that strikes were still being launched late Friday afternoon. Iran has not taken responsibility for the ship attack and instead warned it would reject any transit in the strait without its approval. A senior Iranian diplomat insisted that any credible security arrangement must be coordinated with Iran as the coastal state, comments that appeared to undercut the week-old deal.
