A Fourth of July night in Coney Island turned chaotic when gunfire broke out near the boardwalk, injuring eight people, half of them children, say police in Brooklyn. Shots rang out around 10:30pm Saturday as fireworks were underway, reports the New York Post. The victims were four boys ages 6 to 14, two men in their 30s, and two women in their 20s. One of the women, a 21-year-old, was in critical condition with a gunshot wound to the chest, per NBC News. The others were in stable condition.

A deli worker tells the Post he saw officers "running with the kids in their hands" and watched one child being loaded into an ambulance. Police say a gun was recovered at the scene, but they have not identified any suspects, announced a motive, or said how many shooters may have been involved. No arrests had been made as of Sunday, and the victims have not been publicly named, PIX11.
