Teens Arrested After Shooting Kills 5 Family Members

Two teenagers are in custody after what Illinois officials describe as a deliberate attack that wiped out most of a family in East St. Louis over the weekend. State police say the 15- and 16-year-old suspects, who are related to each other, were arrested Sunday following a call about possible human remains; formal charges had not been filed as of Sunday evening, and investigators declined to discuss a motive, per the New York Times. The shootings took place at three locations in the city and left five relatives dead and two others critically injured.

One person was shot at a home, three others at a housing complex, and another three at a park, per WJBK and CBS News. Authorities believe at least one suspect is related to the victims, identified as Cherie L. May, 49; Devin D. May, 24; Patricia A. May, 74; Quentin L. Thompson, 21; and Shania W. Thompson, 25. Officials have not detailed the family relationships. Illinois State Police Director Brendan Kelly called the violence "terrible" and "evil" but said it would not derail ongoing efforts to lower violent crime in East St. Louis.
