Elon Musk is again opening his checkbook for Republicans, this time to try to shape the 2026 midterms. Axios reports that the billionaire is reviving his America PAC, the super PAC that poured more than $260 million into backing Donald Trump in 2024 and made Musk the biggest individual donor in any US election cycle. The reactivated PAC will zero in on get-out-the-vote work for conservatives through door-knocking, digital ads, and mailers, particularly targeting Republicans who skip nonpresidential elections.
The effort, led by Musk adviser Chris Young, is expected to add to an already sizable GOP financial lead ahead of November, as the party tries to hold Congress despite Trump's weak polling. Trump adviser James Blair calls America PAC's return "a huge boost," promising that Republicans will "ruthlessly execute" their plan. "The president's political team and the rest of the GOP apparatus have built a top-notch operation that will put Republicans in a strong position to buck history and retain control of Congress this fall," an America PAC rep tells Axios.
The Times of India notes that Musk's reentry into the political sphere comes just days after he proclaimed to the Economist that "I think I got a little too involved in politics" the last time around: "I got carried away, frankly." Now that Musk has inserted himself back into the thick of politics, it remains to be seen whether he'll keep things on the up-and-up: Earlier this month, a bipartisan panel in Wisconsin found that Musk likely broke bribery laws there when he vowed to dole out $1 million checks to voters in last year's state Supreme Court elections, per NBC News.
