Third Detainee at Newark ICE Facility Dies

A third man at an immigration detention center in New Jersey has died following a medical emergency, renewing scrutiny of the ICE facility. Federal officials say Guatemalan national Jose Chajon-Raxon, taken into custody on July 18 and sent to Delaney Hall, appeared to suffer a seizure the next day and was transported to a hospital, where he later died, per the New York Times. His age wasn't specified. Another Delaney detainee died earlier this month, and a previous one in December.

"While waiting for first-responders to arrive, Chajon-Raxon was provided proper medical care from the nurse, who reassured him he was safe," says a DHS statement. "The nurse gave a comprehensive report to first-responders, and Chajon-Raxon was taken to the hospital." The agency says ICE was not immediately notified of the man's death, and it's not clear exactly when he died. In June, the DHS stopped reporting on deaths of detainees no longer in custody, which Democratic Rep. Rob Menendez calls a loophole to dodge oversight. "It is consistent with everything ICE tries to do to avoid transparency and accountability," he said. More than 50 people have died in ICE custody since January, reports Reuters.
