A domestic dispute in Billings, Montana, ended with eight members of the same extended family, including four children, dead Sunday night, authorities say. Police responding around 6pm to a report of a shooter at a home on the city's west side arrived to gunfire and a house already overtaken by flames, the Guardian reports. A neighbor's fundraiser said the victims spanned four generations, from a great-grandmother in her 90s to a 7-year-old girl. Brad Ireland, whose former wife and two children were among the dead, identified the shooter as 44-year-old Alan Smith. He was found outside the house with a self-inflicted gunshot wound and later died at a hospital.
Ireland told the AP that Smith's parents had asked him to move out, but he returned unexpectedly on Sunday and opened fire as the family gathered for dinner. Ireland said Smith killed his grandmother, his parents, his younger sister, and four children. Ireland described Smith as a "hermit" who spent most of his time on his computer but said he had never known him to be violent.
- The victims included Megan Ghekiere, Ireland's ex-wife, and their two children, 13-year-old Owen Ireland and 7-year-old Chloe Ireland. Ghekiere's two stepchildren with her current husband, 12-year-old Charlotte Ghekiere and 15-year-old Landon Ghekiere, were also killed.
- "The one thing we do know is that Charlotte was the hero," said Jennifer Mercer, the neighbor who started the fundraiser. "Charlotte called 911 and she tried to save her family. And that's something the family does want out there."
- Family members identified the other victims as Evelyn Smith, who was in her 90s and lived at an assisted living facility, Barb Smith, a retired teacher in her 60s, and Dana Smith, an Air Force veteran and former Boeing employee in his 70s, KTVQ reports.
