The first Daisy Chain Fields Music festival, created and headlined by Olivia Rodrigo, launched Saturday in Southern California with an all-female lineup of artists and a spotlight on issues important to women and girls. The one-day event reflects Rodrigo's momentum into political advocacy, USA Today reports; a reel on the festival's Instagram account showed Rodrigo criticizing President Trump while standing with Planned Parenthood staff members. That and other groups have booth space, and Rodrigo announced Friday that 10 nonprofits were receiving a total of $10 million from the festival, per the Orange County Register. The support is meaningful, a Planned Parenthood official said: "It means more people will learn that they can go to Planned Parenthood health centers across the country for birth control, STI testing and treatment, sex education, abortion where legal, cancer screenings, wellness exams, and so much more."
There were 45,000 tickets sold, and 5,000 or so volunteers and staff were expected to be at the site in Irvine's Great Park on a hot day. As they arrive, festivalgoers encounter a sidewalk illustrated with a milestones in women's history, such as court rulings, sports achievements, and quotes from figures like Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor. There's a booth for HeadCount, a nonpartisan voter registration program. Rodrigo said she drew inspiration from the musicians, nonprofits, and the Lilith Fair founded by Sarah McLachlan in the 1990s, per ABC News. The two are scheduled to sing together. Other performers include Chappell Roan, Doechii, Bikini Kill, Garbage, Mitski, and the Breeders. Katseye canceled because of an injury, but three unhurt members did an introduction on Saturday.
Pop singer Eli, one of the early acts, announced her own donations and support for various causes. "This journal entry is to show you my fundamental belief that we must redistribute wealth," she said.
