1 Dead, 15 Missing After Flash Floods Slam Grand Canyon

A search is underway in one of the Grand Canyon's most remote corridors after sudden, powerful flooding hit Bright Angel Creek and the storied Phantom Ranch area, leaving at least 15 people unaccounted for, NBC News reports. The body of a 46-year-old man was recovered Sunday night near Crystal Rapids along the Colorado River, the AP reports. The National Park Service says it's seeking information on anyone who may have been hiking along Bright Angel Creek or the North Kaibab Trail, or staying at Phantom Ranch, Bright Angel, or Cottonwood campgrounds. Among those unaccounted for is a hiking group from Texas, Fox News reports.

Sixty-two people have been evacuated so far, with more evacuations expected. Officials report destroyed footbridges that cut off crossings over the creek and warn that some Colorado River routes will be closed while damage is inspected and debris hazards assessed. Phantom Ranch is reachable only by trail, raft, or mule and has been a draw for Grand Canyon visitors since 1922. It and other popular tourist spots are closed, and all lodges and hotels within Grand Canyon National Park are also closed to tourists starting Monday because the main water line is out of service.
