A fitness race that bills itself as a polished global spectacle is apologizing for an incident that was anything but. Hyrox says it mishandled a Beijing event in which a competitor soiled herself during the race yet was allowed to keep going, prompting complaints from participants about hygiene and safety, per the BBC. Australian Joanna Wietrzyk, 24, ultimately completed eight 1-kilometer runs and eight workout stations in the fastest time, but only after what the New York Post describes as a diarrhea emergency that resulted in fecal matter "running down her legs."

Hyrox co-founder Moritz Fürste said on Instagram that organizers "did not handle the situation like we should have" and promised swift rule and process changes. The company, which strictly penalizes things like spitting, insists it has clear health protocols but says they broke down in this "unforeseen" case. Some participants have called for compensation and fees to be refunded, citing contaminated equipment; one sports scholar says the episode highlights a "results-driven" culture and questions whether Hyrox's rapid commercial growth has outpaced its safeguards, per the BBC. As the Athletic reports, Wietrzyk later shared a photo from a hospital bed, writing, "Go hard or go home … a win is a win."
