Oxford United is backpedaling after unveiling a clothing line with "United 93" stamped on it—an unintended echo of one of the flights hijacked during the 9/11 attacks. The club says the design was meant as a nod to its 1893 founding year, but that it was released "without understanding of the historical context and associations," per the BBC. In a statement, the League One team said it has pulled the "Campus Collection" lineup from sale and offered its apologies, adding it takes "full responsibility" for failing to carry out the proper checks.
The collection was said to be "inspired by the style and culture of American sports," per the Guardian. The line was released on the 25th anniversary of the US terror attacks and was yanked from the club's website about two hours after it went live. "It should not have reached the point of sale," the club said in its statement, adding that it's reviewing its approval process to avoid similar missteps. United Airlines Flight 93 crashed in Pennsylvania on September 11, 2001, killing all 44 people on board and becoming one of the most scrutinized moments of the attacks.
