Iowa City Shooting Injures 5, Including 3 UI Students
   (Iowa City Police Department)

Gunfire erupted in Iowa City's busy Pedestrian Mall early Sunday, leaving five people wounded, including three University of Iowa students—and no arrests so far, the Des Moines Register reports. Police say a "large fight" broke out around 1:45am in the 100 block of East College Street, blocks from campus and surrounded by bars and restaurants, before shots were fired. One victim is in critical condition; the others are listed as stable. The students aren't believed to have been the intended targets, KCRG reports. One woman says she was downtown with her daughter at the time because she was visiting for Iowa Moms Weekend, KCCI reports. "I turned to my daughter and said, 'There's a shooter. I want you to run as fast as you can, get safe, even if you have to hide,'" she says.

The university issued a Hawk Alert around 2am, warning of "confirmed victims" and first responders on the scene. By midmorning, crime scene tape still blocked off part of the Ped Mall, though the area reopened to the public shortly after 11:30am. Gov. Kim Reynolds said she has offered state resources to assist the investigation, calling the shooting a "senseless act of violence." UI President Barb Wilson confirmed the three student victims and urged the community to rely on official updates, acknowledging many are feeling shaken. Police say there is no ongoing threat to public safety and have released an image of five hooded males they believe are connected to the incident, asking anyone with information or video to contact Detective Cade Burma at 319-356-5275 or cburma@iowa-city.org.
