A Shakira beach concert in Rio de Janeiro has turned tragic before it's even begun. Organizers of the "Todo Mundo no Rio" show confirmed that a worker assembling structures for Saturday's free Copacabana Beach event featuring the Colombian singer died following an accident on Sunday afternoon, per People. In a statement translated from Portuguese, they said first responders treated the man on-site and firefighters rushed him to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The state fire brigade said the worker "suffered crushing injuries to his lower limbs in a lifting system" and had been freed from the equipment by colleagues before emergency teams arrived.
A witness on the beach told AFP he saw people suddenly running and then noticed part of the structure was down, with bystanders trying to pull the man out from underneath. Organizers said they are supporting the contractor, its staff, and the victim's family; they did not announce any changes to the schedule. Shakira was confirmed as headliner of the third annual event in February, following in the footsteps of Madonna and Lady Gaga, whose 2025 appearance drew 2.5 million people, marking the largest concert for a solo female artist in history, per Variety.
