The man charged with trying to storm the White House Correspondents' Association dinner and accused of trying to kill President Trump took a picture of himself in his hotel room just minutes earlier, outfitted with an ammunition bag, shoulder gun holster, a sheathed knife, pliers, and wire cutters, investigators said Wednesday in a new court filing. Cole Tomas Allen wore black pants, a black shirt, and a red tie as he snapped the image at 8:03pm in his room at the Washington Hilton, the venue where Trump and hundreds of journalists were meeting for a gala Saturday night, report the AP and NBC News.
Allen, 31, of Torrance, California, was captured when he tried to race past a security barricade near the ballroom, prompting an exchange of gunfire with Secret Service agents tasked with safeguarding the event. CBS News reports the government wants Allen held pending trial, per the memorandum filed Wednesday by Jeanine Pirro. It reads in part:
- "The defendant's actions were premeditated, violent, and calculated to cause death. ... There is no condition or combination of conditions that will reasonably assure the safety of other people or the community if the defendant were released from custody. The Court should detain the defendant pending trial."
