He Celebrated a Sacrifice Fly, Then Went Over the Railing

A celebration at a Chicago White Sox game on Wednesday abruptly turned dangerous when a fan went over a railing and dropped more than 10 feet into the visiting team's bullpen. The man fell from a short barrier above the Kansas City Royals' bullpen at Guaranteed Rate Field during the bottom of the third inning, as fans reacted to a sacrifice fly by Chase Meidroth, reports the Athletic, citing the Kansas City Star. A friend reportedly tried to catch the man by his legs, per the Star, and witnesses said he didn't land on his head and was breathing as paramedics arrived.

Play halted briefly while medical staff treated the man in the bullpen, then resumed after he was taken out on a stretcher and transported to a nearby hospital. The White Sox said they later received a "positive report" on his condition and wished him a "full and speedy recovery," per a release. Royals reliever Nick Mears said a security guard told him the fan's condition had improved by the time he reached the hospital, per the Athletic. The incident follows an incident last year in Pittsburgh in which a Pirates fan suffered severe injuries after a more than 20-foot fall.
