The son of filmmaker Rob Reiner is asking a California court to unlock his own money so he can fight the charges against him in the murder of his parents. In a probate petition, 32-year-old Nick Reiner says he's entitled to at least half of a separate trust set up for him—worth more than $1.5 million, according to the filing—but hasn't received the mandatory payout that was supposed to arrive when he turned 30. The petition stresses that "what did and did not happen" to his parents isn't at issue in the trust dispute, reports People, and says Reiner "loved his parents" and is "devastated by their deaths."

Instead, the filing centers on the trustee, whom it accuses of stonewalling with "shifting" explanations and vague worries about Reiner's ability to manage money. The trust is described as irrevocable and non-discretionary, meaning, the petition argues, the trustee can't block distributions based on how Reiner might use the funds. Reiner, who has pleaded not guilty to two counts of first-degree murder, wants the money to pay a high-profile lawyer, Alan Jackson, and to cover jail basics like socks and soap. Jackson previously withdrew after funds weren't released, but says in a declaration included with the petition that "my firm stands ready, willing, and able to resume representation of Mr. Reiner" if the money is released, per the AP. Reiner is currently represented by a public defender.
