A noise complaint on a Bronx bus ended in deadly gunfire Monday afternoon, police say. Around 2:30pm on an eastbound Bx36 bus on East Tremont Avenue near White Plains Road, a 41-year-old passenger reportedly told a teenage rider he was speaking too loudly on his phone, police sources tell the New York Daily News. The teen then allegedly pulled a handgun and shot the man in the stomach.
Medics took the victim to Jacobi Medical Center, where he died; he's been identified by family as Jonathan Pettigrew, a father of seven who was on his way to pick up his 4-year-old daughter from daycare, per Gothamist. He was anxious "around a lot of noise," his brother tells the outlet. The shooter, described as a male teen wearing a white T-shirt and carrying a black handgun, ran off south on White Plains Road, authorities say. He remained at large as of Tuesday morning as a manhunt unfolded, per WNYW.
