Two Spanish-speaking American icons with two very different fan bases met Monday in Madrid. The Vatican confirmed Pope Leo met Puerto Rican superstar Bad Bunny, a former altar boy raised by devout Catholics, during the pontiff's first trip to Spain as pope. While Bad Bunny—born Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio—was in town for a run of concerts at Atlético Madrid's home arena, Leo opted for a free gathering at rival Real Madrid's stadium, where he told a crowd of 80,000 that song "permeates our shared life." Afterward, Leo briefly met with Bad Bunny and his family backstage, the Washington Post reports, noting that the artist initiated the meeting. No photos of the encounter are expected, the Vatican said, per the New York Times.

The two crowd magnets had effectively split Madrid into dueling attractions; Leo himself quipped to reporters that many would probably pick Bad Bunny over him, "but… there will also be a few there to see the pope," he said. Their messages diverged, too: while Bad Bunny's hits play with noncommittal romance, Leo used a Saturday vigil to urge young Spaniards to embrace marriage and family life. He's drawn close to 2 million spectators to his various events in Spain, per the Post. On Wednesday, he visited prison inmates ahead of an evening Mass at the Sagrada Familia Basilica, the world's tallest church, to coincide with the 100th anniversary of the death of its architect Antoni Gaudí, per the AP. Bad Bunny, meanwhile, will be leading a dance party.
