The driver who last week plowed his vehicle through a crowd of World Cup revelers in Mexico's Cabo San Lucas, injuring 17, has died of his own injuries suffered during the incident, reports the New York Times. Authorities say he passed on Tuesday morning, not even a week after Thursday's crash in the city's Centro district. The driver had reportedly been dragged out of his vehicle by bystanders and attacked after he'd suddenly accelerated into the crowd that officials say had been blocking his way. The Times notes that Mexico's soccer team "has frequently drawn frenzied crowds pouring onto streets after games." "Our condolences to the family," an official from the Los Cabos City Council wrote in a brief message on social media cited by local outlets.

World Cup revelry in Cabo San Lucas turned chaotic on Wednesday night when a car pushed through a dense crowd of Mexico fans, leaving at least 17 people injured. Authorities in the Baja California Sur resort city say the incident unfolded just after 9pm on Lazaro Cardenas Boulevard, where thousands had gathered to celebrate Mexico's 3-0 victory over the Czech Republic in Mexico City, per People. Officials say the driver, who hasn't been identified, was surrounded by people blocking his path and pressing against the vehicle when he "suddenly accelerated," striking multiple pedestrians and sending people flying into the air, Reuters reports.

The vehicle then crashed into posts before people pulled out and attacked the driver, according to video footage, which also showed a bloodied person lying unmoving on a curb, per Reuters and the New York Times. The driver was detained at the scene, treated at a hospital, and then placed under the authority of prosecutors, who will decide on possible charges. Acting municipal president Jose Manuel Larumbe Pineda offered condolences to the victims—at least one is reported in critical condition—and pledged support and transparency as the investigation proceeds.
