Police say a minor has been arrested in connection with an acid attack that injured six people in New Jersey. The women and teenage girls were doused with acid Monday night in what police say was a targeted attack on a residential street in Jersey City, reports NBC News. Authorities, who initially put the number of victims at five, say two assailants on a moped rode past the group and hurled sulfuric acid at them, causing burns and skin peeling. Police say a 21-year-old woman is in a burn unit for treatment of burns to her face and scalp, while the other five victims are in stable condition, reports the Guardian.
Police say three of the victims are teens. Investigators believe the assault is tied to an earlier dispute involving a large group, though no details of that conflict have been released. Police said Tuesday that charges are pending against the juvenile suspect. Residents said there had been a lot of "commotion" in the area on Monday, but they were shocked by the attack. "People just don't have that compassion for other people anymore. It just seems like people are out to get each other and get revenge," one woman told ABC7.
