A workday at a Wilmington, Delaware, hospital turned deadly Tuesday, and police say the suspected gunman is now in custody across state lines, NBC News reports. A 23-year-old man was arrested in Philadelphia on Tuesday evening, hours after one person was fatally shot and another wounded at ChristianaCare Wilmington Hospital, about 30 miles away, according to Wilmington Police Chief Wilfredo Campos. The FBI and the Delaware State Police were among the agencies that assisted with the response, CNN reports.
The shooting was reported around 3:30pm, and officers found two victims but no shooter, prompting a floor-by-floor search as hospital staff sheltered in place. The hospital diverted patients from its emergency department amid the chaos, the AP reports. Authorities have not released the victims' names or the survivor's condition, citing family privacy, and the suspect's identity is also being withheld. Police described the attack as a "targeted, isolated incident" and said charges and extradition are pending. Delaware Gov. Matt Meyer said his physician wife was reporting for duty at the hospital when the violence broke out and called hospital employees "heroes" for their response. Wilmington's mayor labeled it a "terrible day" for the city of 73,000, while Sen. Lisa Blunt Rochester said she'd been briefed and praised the rapid law enforcement response.
