A bicyclist who stopped to break up a roadside altercation in Florida ended up fatally shot, authorities say. Orange County sheriff's officials allege 26-year-old Raul Lionel Vazquez killed 56-year-old Daryl Hill on Tuesday morning in Apopka, northwest of Orlando, reports Fox News. Hill had stopped to intervene in a heated argument between a man and a woman outside a pickup truck, with Vazquez reportedly shouting in the woman's face, per People. Investigators say Vazquez and Hill then began fighting, with the woman joining in, before all three moved into nearby bushes.
Witnesses told police Hill emerged with his hands up and asked for help, then was shot as he tried to walk away. He died later at a hospital. Vazquez, who was already free on bond in another assault case, has been charged with second-degree murder. Investigators say Vazquez gave "many different accounts" of what happened. Hill had just dropped his 10-year-old daughter off for the first day of school.
