As His House Burned, Cops Say He Stole Fire Rescue Truck

Fire crews in northern New Hampshire say the man whose house was burning didn't just watch from the lawn—he allegedly hijacked one of their rescue trucks. Authorities say 30-year-old Nestor Roman II of Dalton climbed into a Whitefield Fire & Rescue F-550 vehicle as firefighters battled the blaze engulfing his house early Tuesday and drove off, nearly hitting three firefighters in the process, reports NBC Boston.

State police say Roman struck a fire engine and a pickup while forcing his way onto the road, damaged nearby properties and fences, and ultimately crashed the truck miles away at another Dalton home, where a resident reported he was also trying to take items from their porch, per Fox News. Troopers arrested him there after what they described as an uncooperative encounter. Roman faces multiple felony and misdemeanor counts, including reckless conduct with a deadly weapon, burglary, theft, and resisting arrest. No firefighters were hurt, the house was declared a total loss, and investigators are still working to determine how the blaze began.
