Luigi Mangione: 'I Shot Mr. Thompson in Manhattan'

Luigi Mangione made his expected plea deal in federal court on Friday and calmly came clean to the judge about the murder of a health insurance CEO:

• "I shot Mr. Thompson in Manhattan," Mangione said, referring to Brian Thompson of UnitedHealthcare. "I understood that my actions would place him in fear of death of bodily injury. I knew what I was doing was illegal."
• Mangione told the court he suffered from years of severe back pain stemming from an injury and struggled to navigate the insurance system. He said he learned the location of UHC's annual investor conference, which was not publicly disclosed, by posing as an investor, reports the New York Times. He admitted shooting Thompson with a gun he made with a 3-D printer.
• NBC News previously reported that there's no record of Mangione ever being insured by UHC.

• The 28-year-old pleaded guilty to two federal stalking charges tied to the killing—he had not faced federal murder charges. He still faces a state murder trial next month, though the federal plea deal could affect that, notes USA Today. His lawyers already have filed a motion in state court arguing that Friday's plea means he should not face a second trial because of the principle of double jeopardy.
• Mangione will be sentenced in December on the federal charges and faces a maximum of life in prison.
