Jurors in the Lindsay Clancy murder trial heard Monday from her mother, who said her daughter confided she had "thoughts of harming the children" months before the three kids were killed. Testifying for the defense in Plymouth, Mass., Paula Musgrove described a steep mental decline: Clancy begged to sleep in her mother's bed, said her psychiatric medications were "destroying" her mind, and texted that she was "really sick" and didn't want to be alone, per the Guardian. Clancy, 36, admits strangling Cora, 5, Dawson, 3, and Callan, 8 months, in January 2023 but has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity, citing postpartum psychosis; prosecutors say the killings were deliberate.
"She would say to me, 'This isn't me, I've never been like this before.' And I would agree, because she wasn't," Musgrove testified of the former labor and delivery nurse, per CNN. Musgrove and Clancy's sister, Allison Ozga, said Clancy was losing weight, growing paranoid, and reporting suicidal thoughts. Her lawyer said she had searched "how to slit your throat to die," per CBS News. Emphasizing the apparent change in her mental health, Margaret Hamp, a nurse who previously worked with Clancy, testified that she once told the defendant about Andrea Yates, a mother found not guilty by reason of insanity of drowning her five children, per CNN. Hamp said Clancy cried and asked, "How could a mother hurt her children?"
