A Father's Day lunch at an Ohio barbecue restaurant ended in one father losing his young daughter, and another father being charged alongside his teen daughter in the toddler's death, Fox 8 reports. Police in Beachwood say Jasmine McFadden of Euclid was backing an SUV into a space next to the patio at City Barbeque on Chagrin Boulevard around 1:30pm Sunday when it suddenly sped up, smashed through a metal fence, and hit a family seated outside. Their 3-year-old daughter later died at Hillcrest Hospital; her parents were treated for minor injuries.
Investigators say McFadden, who does not have a driver's license, was driving, despite her father, 61-year-old Kenneth McFadden, initially telling officers he was behind the wheel. Surveillance footage contradicted his account, according to Beachwood Police Chief Daniel Grispino. Jasmine McFadden is charged with aggravated vehicular homicide. Kenneth McFadden faces counts of obstructing official business and wrongful entrustment, with police alleging he knowingly allowed his unlicensed daughter to drive and then misled officers, hindering the investigation. Both appeared in Shaker Heights Municipal Court, posted bond, and were released. Prosecutors plan to present the case against the younger McFadden to a grand jury to consider felony charges.
WKYC reports that the elder McFadden is a "Cleveland State men's basketball legend," the school's all-time leading scorer, known as Ken "Mouse" McFadden. The restaurant, expressing its heartbreak over the tragedy, says it will be closed temporarily, News 5 Cleveland reports.
