Review: You May Want to Skip Will Ferrell's New Show

Will Ferrell's latest sports comedy is likely to test fans' patience, writes Daniel Fienberg at the Hollywood Reporter. In his review of Netflix's 10-episode golf series The Hawk, Fienberg says the show manages to wring only the bare minimum of laughs from an all-star lineup that includes Ferrell, Molly Shannon, Fortune Feimster, Jimmy Tatro, Chris Parnell, David Hornsby, and Luke Wilson. Ferrell plays Lonnie "The Hawk" Hawkins, a once-dominant pro golfer stuck for a decade on the PGA's feeder circuit and trying for a comeback that might also repair his family life.

"In general, The Hawk is a show that consistently operates at a barely minimal level," writes Fienberg. It "feels like a set of placeholder notecards, a vague outline of a series unencumbered by any fleshed-out ideas or characterizations. There will be countless worse shows this year, but it's doubtful that 2026 will offer a show as hollow and forgettable as The Hawk." If that sounds harsh, note that the show has a meager 31% positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes. At Slate, Alex Kirshner can't figure out why it's apparently so hard for anyone to make a decent show about golf. This latest is "so bad that I'm calling for a moratorium on all golf shows," reads the headline to his review.
