A crosstown rivalry game turned into a political flashpoint on Friday when a man sprinted onto the field at Yankee Stadium with a Palestinian flag during the Yankees-Mets matchup on the 25th anniversary of 9/11. Wearing a jersey that read "No Kings," the man sprinted around the outfield in the seventh inning as security chased him down, video cited by TMZ and other outlets shows. The Athletic reports that he emerged at exactly 9:11pm, a timing detail that drew added attention.
Fans at the Subway Series responded with loud "USA!" chants, and some threw beer cans as security tackled and restrained him. The NYPD identified the man as 38-year-old Kelly Marcucci of Long Island and said he was arrested on misdemeanor charges of trespassing and interfering with a professional sporting event, reports the New York Post. He was issued a desk appearance ticket and will face the charges in court, per TMZ. Before and after the disruption, the stadium marked the somber 9/11 anniversary, with 2001 Yankees figures including Derek Jeter, Jorge Posada, Paul O'Neill, Tino Martinez, Scott Brosius, and Mariano Rivera joining tributes to the nearly 3,000 people killed in the attacks.
