TV's big night is looking a little smaller. Nielsen reports that NBC's broadcast of the 78th Emmy Awards on Sunday night drew 6.7 million viewers, a 10% slide from last year and the show's third-weakest audience on record, per the Los Angeles Times. The ceremony, hosted by Law & Order: SVU star Mariska Hargitay from the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, continues to bump up against a broader shift: viewers opting for next-day clips on social media instead of live awards shows.
The Emmys aren't alone. Ratings for the Golden Globes and Oscars also dipped this year, and the Television Academy is now in talks to shift the show from its broadcast rotation to Amazon Prime Video. The Oscars have already locked in a move to YouTube in 2029. NBCUniversal reported greater Emmy success elsewhere, per Variety, with 133 million social views generated across Facebook, Instagram, X, and YouTube—a 90% increase from last year.
